  • Romania’s Geography today places it as the largest country in southeastern Europe and the twelfth- largest country in Europe.
  • It has the seventh largest population of the European Union countries, 21.5 million people. The capital city is Bucharest, the sixth largest city in the European Union with a population of 1.9 million.
  • A large part of Romania’s border with Serbia and Bulgaria is formed by the Danube River. Other important rivers are the Siret, the Ott, and the Mures, running through Transylvania.
  • Romania’s terrain is distributed roughly equally between mountainous, hilly and lowland territories. The Carpathian Mountains dominate the center of Romania, with an altitude of 2,000 meters.
  • Romania’s geographical diversity has led to a rich presence diversity of flora and fauna.
  • Romania has one of the largest areas of undisturbed forest in Europe.
  • More than 50% of Romania’s protected areas, including the Biosphere Reserve in the Delta Danube, has been placed on the World Heritage List. Within its boundaries is one of the most extensive reed bed systems in the world.
